Spa Francorchamps Classic May 27th - May 29th
The first Spa Classic took place at the weekend and was organised by the Patrick Peter team. Group C were fortunate enough to be part of this great new event. Three days of action with hundreds of classic race cars, and truly memorable food in the Drivers Hospitality Club and all at the majestic Spa Francorchamps circuit.
On behalf of Group C I would particularly like to thank the organising team of Spa Classic for producing such an amazing spectacle, Patrick Peter, Guillaume Le Metayer and the RACB. We wish them every success for the future and look forward to working with them again next year!
With varying weather conditions at the beginning of the weekend from rain on Friday to overcast mornings and brilliant sunshine in the afternoons on both Saturday and Sunday it all made for a truly fantastic event.
The two Group C qualifying sessions took place on Saturday, with the fastest times being set on the 7,004 km Spa circuit by the two Mercedes-Benz C11s. Both of the fastest lap times were set in the first session, with Bob Berridge lapping the Belgian track in 2:05.295, (a time which would have qualified him 4th on the grid for the LMS 1000k race held at Spa a few weeks ago, ahead of the Oreca Peugeot 905!) Christian Glaesel was second quickest, 1.871 seconds behind Katsu Kubota who posted the third fastest time in his Nissan in Q2.
Congratulations to winners of the Race which took place on Sunday, in C1 - 1st Christian Glaesel, 2nd Katsu Kubota, 3rd Ferdinand de Lesseps. C2 winners – 1st Duncan McKay and Robin Ward, 2nd Don Miles.
Well done everyone!
Our commiserations must go to Bob Berridge who after leading the race by 8 seconds had to retire with a failed ECU 4 laps from the end. Jean-Marc Merlin, Thomas Dozin and Eric Jamar who retired in the race. To Peter and Andy Meyrick who after qualifying 4th overall were unable to race after engine troubles. Chris Roche and Martin O’Connell, David Hart, Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott, Eric Rickenbacher who all suffered from accidents or mechanical woes.
We would like to send our best wishes and support to Fernando Espirito Santo and his family after an accident in CER at the weekend and wish him a speedy recovery.
A massive thank you to all those who attended the Spa Classic and for your commitment and enthusiasm as always. I hope you all enjoyed the good weather, great racing and especially the Drivers Club catering, which I’m sure you will agree, was spectacular!
We had lots of great comments from the organisers and enthusiasts over the weekend, all of whom expressed how good it was to see such a fantastic turn out of Group C cars.
